Abstract: Preeclampsia (new-onset hypertension and proteinuria presenting after 20 weeks gestation) is a serious complication affecting 1 in 12 pregnancies. Annually, preeclampsia claims the lives of 76,000 mothers and 500,000 babies, making it one of the world’s deadliest pregnancy complications. Diagnosis remains a significant challenge and symptoms have a poor ability to predict disease severity. Currently, delivering the baby is the only safe option for the mother, and this results in an extra 5 million premature births every year, which carries its own dangers for the baby's survival and future well-being. Clinical diagnosis remains extremely challenging and ‘rule-in’ diagnostic tests are an urgent need.
Our solution, AI_PREMie, is a clinical decision support tool that uses powerful machine learning algorithms to combine patented blood-based biomarkers with maternal health data to generate personalised diagnostic information and risk stratification for preeclampsia. The diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers were discovered using a groundbreaking blood-based innovative diagnostics platform PALADIN™, which captures the power of the platelet releasate and uses advanced proteomics methods and mass spectrometry to identify molecular diagnostic targets for inflammatory diseases such as preeclampsia. By leveraging artificial intelligence, AI_PREMie seamlessly integrates this biomarker data with clinical information, offering personalised diagnostic insights for patients. Our models are powered by two robust platforms: SAS Viya analytics and Microsoft Azure cloud enabling advanced analytics capabilities, scalability, reliability, and secure handling of healthcare data. In the future, by performing our analysis using standard equipment in the hospital lab as well as using cloud-based APIs, AI_PREMie will return an easily interpretable risk score within a few hours to aid clinical decision-making in real-time.
AI_PREMie stands as a transformative tool in the management of preeclampsia, offering a path to personalised, timely, and accurate diagnosis, ultimately enhancing maternal and foetal outcomes and shaping the future landscape of obstetric care.
